Preventing Foot Pain When Cycling

A large majority of people who ride bicycles experience some type of foot pain, regardless of their level of expertise or performance. While cycling, great force is generated from the legs to the feet and through to the pedals. This output of energy can result in burning, numbness, and sharp pain in the sole of the foot. A combination of long rides, warm weather, and tight shoes can make matters worse. The first way to help prevent these reactions from happening is to pay attention to footwear. Studies show that cycling shoes should be wider in the toe box to counter the swelling that occurs during a ride. Also, keeping the straps looser allows for a better range of motion. The less flexibility in the sole of the shoe, the more likely it is to cause foot pain. Special inserts are available for stiffer shoes to relieve some of the pressure on the sole of the foot. It’s a good idea to try on cycling shoes later in the day when the feet are more likely to be swollen, as they would be while riding. If you commonly endure foot pain after cycling, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and options for treatment.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Exercises for Flat Feet

Children are naturally born with flat feet, and by the time they are teenagers, the arch usually develops normally. However, there are various circumstances where the arches either do not develop or they fall. These include injuries, obesity, genetics, and arthritis. Those with neurological or muscular diseases may also be more prone to having flat feet. Wearing orthotics or arch supports, and performing certain stretches, can reduce pain from fallen arches or help correct them. Examples of exercises that might help raise, strengthen, and lengthen the arches are heel stretches and tennis or golf ball rolls. Stretch your heels by standing with your hands resting on a wall at eye level. Keep one leg forward and the other extended behind you. Press both heels into the floor. Then bend one leg at a time toward the wall with the opposite heel pressed into the floor and hold this position for 30 seconds. Repeat on each side four times. For the tennis or golf ball roll, sit in a chair with a ball under one foot. Keep a straight spine and roll the ball under your foot, focusing on the arch. Do this for two to three minutes and then change feet. If you have flat feet and they are causing you discomfort, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can provide you with additional exercise options and further treatment that is right for you.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Dr. James Kutchback from James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

When Do Gout Attacks Commonly Occur?

An early symptom of the foot condition that is known as gout may be detected in the blood. Elevated purine or uric acid levels may indicate gout has developed, which can lead to painful attacks. Gout is a form of arthritis and generally affects the joints in the big toe. It can cause debilitating pain and may be accompanied by swelling and redness. Gout can develop from genetic reasons, or from eating foods that have large amounts of purines. These types of foods can include shellfish, red meat, and drinks that are made with heavy amounts of sugar. Many people have gout attacks at night, and pain can be severe during the first several hours. Effective prevention techniques may consist of reducing the number of foods that are eaten that have purines, eliminating alcohol, and drinking plenty of water daily. If you have had one or frequent gout attacks, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. James Kutchback from James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Two Groups of Foot Muscles

People who frequently go to the gym understand the importance of exercising the muscles in their bodies. With this being noted, the feet are often neglected, and many people fail to properly stretch and exercise their feet. The muscles in the feet can be categorized into two different areas, and the intrinsic foot muscles can be referred to as the core of the feet. The arch is maintained by these muscles and can aid in shock absorption. Global muscles are typically larger, and the ankle is moved by these types of muscles, which are also responsible for pointing and flexing the toes. Common exercises to perform consists of picking up marbles with the toes. This stretch can engage both groups of muscles. A strengthening exercise for the toes can be done by spreading them out as far as possible, repeated several times. If you would like more information about how foot exercises can benefit the feet, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can guide you toward effective foot stretches to perform.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. James Kutchback from James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Facts About Children’s Feet

There are basic facts involving children’s feet that are interesting to know. The bones in children’s feet do not fully develop until the age of 13, and it is helpful to provide them with shoes that have the necessary support as they grow. This is crucial in maintaining good foot health. Many parents realize they are buying shoes at an accelerated rate during the first few years after birth. Research has shown the feet grow the fastest in the first three years. Flexible and comfortable shoes are ideal to purchase, and this can help the child to get accustomed to their growing feet. The feet house one-quarter of the bones that are in the body, and the majority of babies are born with flat feet. The arch generally develops during the teenage years, and having an abnormal foot structure may cause flat feet to lead into adulthood. If you would like more information about children’s foot health, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can provide you with the knowledge you are seeking.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Dr. James Kutchback of James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Healing From a Broken Toe

It typically takes about six weeks to heal from a broken toe, but the actual time frame depends on the severity of the fracture, the age of the person, and pre-existing medical conditions. Symptoms of a broken toe include pain, swelling, and bruising, and it can be difficult to walk. Additionally, a bone may protrude through the skin and the toe may look deformed. Treatments involve taping the broken toe to the toe next to it which provides stability, splinting the toe, or surgery may be necessary for more severe breaks. Resting and elevating the affected foot will help reduce swelling and pain. Simple treatment usually suffices in the healing of a broken toe, however, it is important to seek treatment if pain is severe or walking becomes increasingly difficult. If you have broken your toe, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an examination and treatment recommendations.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. James Kutchback from James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in The Woodlands and Woodville, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Plantar Warts Can Be Treated!

Plantar warts are small growths that develop on parts of the feet that bear weight. They're typically found on the bottom of the foot. Don't live with plantar warts, and call us today!

Regardless of the type of exercise you choose to do, there is often specific footwear designed to achieve the best results for that activity. The right shoes can help with proper form and preventing foot pain during exercise. Consider that if you feel pain during or after your workouts, you may be wearing the wrong shoes for the activity. Additionally, your shoes could be worn out, or the shoes may not be the right ones for your foot type. A gait analysis involves watching how you walk without shoes to understand how your feet bear weight as you walk. This is often a starting point to recommending a shoe type for your individual gait pattern. Shoes can differ by pronation type, arch support, and other foot mechanic specifics. If you experience foot pain during your workouts, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for an examination, a gait analysis, and a discussion about the best shoes for you.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Dr. James Kutchback from James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Flip Flops and Arch Support

Although many men and women enjoy wearing flip flops during the summer time because the shoe is convenient and fashionable, it can wreak havoc on the health of the feet. One of the main reasons why flip flops are not always a desirable choice can be that this type of shoe lacks arch support. Due to insufficient arch support, a flip flop can make conditions such as plantar fasciitis more likely. However, not all flip flops have insufficient arch support. Namely, some flip flops have cushions in the arch of the foot to provide extra support. However, even these extra supportive flip flops still may be detrimental in the sense that the absence of a back strap causes the toes to scrunch up in order to keep the shoe on the foot. If you are someone that often wears flip flops, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist today for more information and potential treatment.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Dr. James Kutchback from James Kutchback, DPM, ABLES, CWS-P. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in The Woodlands and Woodville, TX .  We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
